Would people stop giving every goddamn show 5 star reviews?Would people start reviewing the actual show?Nobody gives a shit that you drove 15 hours and your piece of shit car broke down and some kind disgusting"sister"with terrible hygiene miracled you and you ate a bunch of acid and Bob Weir was singing to you and your uncle died and Jerry played "hes gone" for him and the grateful dead was controlling the weather......Jesus fucking Christ,enough already.If i give a bad review to a show people immediatly jump down my throat and say im a scumbag and i just dont get it,blah,blah,blah.Well guess what,some of these shows are really fucking bad,thats why its called a "REVIEW"section.Some people actually come here and try to take something out of the reviews,sometimes if i read a few terrible reviews i wont download.Forget all this stupid peace loving filthy hippy shit and give a realistic review,lets make this a serious music site,not rainbows and waterfalls.com....People have written numerous times that they saw Jerry Crying during Stella Blue or So many roads or whatever.Thats such crap.I have been to over 300 shows,and i never once saw the man cry.Why the fuck would a grown man cry during Stella Blue?Cry?Tears?Huh?Thats preposterous.Maybe the dude was crying tears of joy for all the money he was making.If you tell me you saw Jerry Garcia cry during any song im here to tell you your a fucking liar.what a joke.People want to worship this man like he can do no wrong,and i personally think he is far and away the best musician ever for my personal taste,and i love the GD,but lets face it,the guy was a junk food eating,deadbeat dad,crackhead,heroin junkie,selfish slob.It is what it is.The dude didnt shower for weeks at a time.Would i go out and Party with Garcia?Hell fucking yes!!!!That would be great.Would i let that guy babysit my kids?HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!Now thats a joke!!!!!!!I wouldnt let him watch my dog.
Some of you might say"You just dont get it Tito".No,YOU just dont get it.Snap into reality.Please just review the shows based on band performance and sound.
By the way,all you morons that love to Wash Weir and Leshs balls,i say this.There is not one man(except Midland)In the GD that would have even come close to playing music professionally without Garcia.Not a chance.Those dudes were cool with the GD,but lets face it,the GD is Jerry Garcia.Look at the ridiculous bullshit"Phil and Friends" and "The Dead" these days.Its terrible.Unintentional comedy in its highest form.A Joke

Dude, it's not my fault you never caught the cosmic synergy of it all. I'll never forget Atlanta '88 when the boys opened with Touch of Grey. Nothing special about that, until you consider that was the SAME EXACT SONG we heard on the radio pulling into the show. It was literally: Touch of Grey, la la la, park the car, dee dee dee, eat a ten-strip, ho ho ho, hotbox the Yugo, choo choo choo, walk in, find seats, lights out, boys on, and BOOM-- Touch of Grey. Don't talk to ME 'bout no pints. Five out of five.

Interesting, perhaps provocative is the right word.

But, I will say this--you should reconsider your take on Lesh. Those in the know (musicians, not me, I am just a critic/amateur/reviewer) consider him an amazing bass player. At least this is what folks have told me in the music biz over the years.

sing versus play assmunch. no one would ever deem phil much of a vocalist, but I know numerous highly regarded musicians who think phil is a truly innovative and astounding bassist. if you haven't picked up on that aspect of the grateful dead, then you need to clean the shit out of your ears and listen to the BAND.

You're a moron if you think Phil couldn't make a living as a musician without Garcia. Is he better with him - did they push each other to be better within the context of the Grateful Dead? Undoubtedly. But I saw him with Paul Barrerre, Billy Payne and Robben Ford and it was fucking great - their version of My Favorite Things was incredible, not least due to Phil's playing. Sorry you didn't like Phil and Friends; I don't follow them or really care because I don't really want to see others playing the Garcia/Hunter songbook. Been there, done that. But I do listen to and see tons of music so I don't need someone to tell me that Willie Weeks is one of the best bassists around - I know it by seeing him. That said, when a Les Claypool (who I think knows a little something about the bass) explains to me why Larry Graham and Phil Lesh are amazing bassists, I think he may have a bit more of a fucking clue than I. Just as I think Madden might have more of an insight on what made Jim Otto special than I do from the handful of games I can recall. But then again, you ain't gonna learn what you don't want to know. It's back to unicorns, rainbows, and waterfalls for me.

BTW, how do you enjoy working the drive thru register?

Well said...I would have offered my own opinion on Phil, but that counts for about as much as the real William Tell's...however, I have spent a lot of time on the side lines in the music biz as a roadie, wannabe, etc., and for forty years have heard nothing but praise for Phil.

Most considered him the real musical genius, and Jerry the instrumentalistic wizard, if you catch my distinction (ie, between playing well, and mastering the subject in and of itself).

well, he was the serious music student that garcia asked to learn bass to play with the band; it wasn't like he didn't have any training in composition.

Yep, that is a good one. I just know so many folks that know so much more about music than I do, and all that have been exposed to him rank Phil as one of the top five, easily, of "rock bassists" (I put him and Jack Bruce together at the top).

Of course he can't sing--who cares? Neither could Bob Dylan, but it doesn't mean he wasn't one of the greatist lyricists of all time.

I can't believe we are actually discussing this but come on it's to me like saying nobody can play these songs again until it's the the great reincarnation of the holy one bullshit. If that was the case I guess half the songs played by the Dead might have been never played and expounded on. Let It Grow

Phil Lesh sang like a bird on these:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd65-11-03.sbd.vernon.9044.sbeok.shnf

Tito's rap makes sense to me, but it takes guts to post a sophomoric review - and maybe someday that reviewer will get better at writing.
Exposure is the way to learn - maybe at first in a comforting zone of fellow tie die wearers.

Then, step up to the Tito and smell the Smokey - when you're ready.

Let me just throw in a few personal experiences - not these:

...yeah, our shit car broke down on the way to Jimi Hendrix, the early show at Berkeley not filmed as was the late show - and we did make the show;
Bob Weir did sing to me or I sang to him and he did a cross-eyed double-take, during Truckin' - I was stone cold sober;
my sister did show up synchronistically at a 1988 GD show;
ok ok enough of those stupid stories!

I hung out with Hank Harrison (the Dead's first manager) in 1978 cause he knew my father since 1963.
In fact my dad babysitted Courtney for Hank when she was like 1 years old.

Anyway, Hank said the musical genius in the group was Phil Lesh, and that the genius behind the genius was Steve Reich.

I don't agree neccessarily, but what Hank was talking about is like what someone else above pointed out, that Lesh had training in composition.

He may be the only guy in the group (the original band) that could read music like a Dick and Jane primer.

In my opinion, Lesh had a really good high range, until 1971 or so, but in 1965, 1968, on Box of Rain, maybe in 1970, he could really hit high notes, and that's who you hear in those early sloppy harmonies they did prior to 1970
- it's Phil singing back-ups and they don't stand out, but they're there.

It's him who did that blood-curdling scream on St. Stephen and other early songs.

For those screams alone I give him 5 stars - nyaaah!

Shit, he did the lead vocals for several early songs they did in 1965-1966, really sweet versions of Early Morning Rain, The Only Time Is Now, and what was it?

Some of those are on archive if you haven't heard them yet.

He lost or stopped using his high vocal range soon after 1970. Maybe it was whiskey or cigarettes?

Maybe they kidded him about his singing such high harmonies (and so he kinda cooled it or got a little self-conscious perhaps).
I did hear Garcia kidding about Lesh's singing those high notes, one night at the Fillmore West onstage, in 1970.

And while I think Lesh's bass playing is vastly over-praised in post 1972 reviews - I mean, I don't much hear those so-called "bombs", sorry, it's my ears not reponding to those frequencies maybe...

I really hear his bass playing on the complex psychedelic stuff the band was playing circa 1968 - 1969.

You know, Woody Guthrie said of Bob Dylan in 1962 or around then, that Bob Dylan was a good singer.

Guthrie did not say Bob was a good writer or poet.

That's kind of interesting.
(Someone above said, Dylan wasn't a great singer, comparable to Lesh's singing not being all that crucial, or words to that effect).

Yet Guthrie, one of America's great folk musician/ songwriter-singers, liked Dylan's voice, but not so much Dylan's songs like "Blowin' In The Wind".

So, what me worry?

I'll give him the benefit of doubt that this is another poster with very similar name posting about the rain and rain songs, because theat would not be about the music, which, as we all know, was totally and completely about jerry and the other guys were just lucky enought to share the stage with him. Of course, Jerry never had anything complimentary to say about any other sideman (note that I do not deem them worthy of the title musician) and most have been high on junk in the Playing in the Band section where he talks about Weir's playing and how his playing can really truly be heard and understood in the context of Weir's.
